The Apoxyomenos

The statue of Apoxyomenos has enriched Croatian cultural heritage as by and large one of the most important finds. After two thousand years lying at the bottom of the sea of the Lošinj aquatorium, the sculpture was dragged to the daylight. The statue of Apoxyomenos was discovered below the sea of the Veliki Orjuli islets that together with Mali Orjuli, Kozjak, Sv. Petar and Ilovik form the group of islets located to the south-eastern part of the island of Lošinj. Three years after its discovery, in 1999, the sculpture was finally taken out from the sea and the restoration process began.

The Apoxyomenos shows a Greek athlete who has just finished competing and who is now relaxing and dedicating himself completely to the purification of his body. The sculpture of Apoxyomenos was created in 3rd and 4th century BC and its style dates back to the period between classicism and Hellenism.

If we compare its importance with other sculptures of the same level, the Croatian Apoxyomenos is the seventh in the world and is important for the high level of preservation and the fact that the original bronze base of the statue has also been conserved. A copy of the statue is exhibited in the Kula museum and gallery space in Veli Lošinj.

The island’s garden is the place where all plants that grow on these islands are gathered. Guests are offered the possibility of walking through the garden with expert guides who will explain the characteristics of each plant to them as well as offering them a tasting of the homemade products made from these plants. There are a variety of liqueurs, jams, teas, lavenders and other such products.

Mali Lošinj Museum

The Museum operates in three museum buildings in Veli Lošinj, Mali Lošinj and Osor, as well as on the island of Lošinj and the island of Cres. The headquarters of the Lošinj Museum is located in the Fritzy Palace in Mali Lošinj where the permanent exhibitions of the Mali Lošinj art collections (the Piperata Collection and the Mihičić Collection) and the Fritzy Gallery are located.

The Kula Museum and Gallery in Veli Lošinj is the exhibition space for the Lošinj Museum where, besides the permanent exhibition of the history of Veli Lošinj, we can also find the Kula Gallery.

The Osor Archeological Collection is a separate and professional individual department of the Lošinj Museum. The permanent exhibition is collocated on the first floor and for years the loggia on the ground floor has been hosting the Branka Hlevnjak’s "Juraj Dalmatinac" Gallery over the summer period.

Osor

As mentioned before, one department of the Lošinj Museum is located in Osor too, a small traditional town on the island of Cres which by itself is a town-museum. The historic town square where beautiful buildings from 15th and 16th century can be found such as the city hall with its covered loggia, the bishop's palace and a magnificent cathedral with its bell tower form the historical centre of the town. During the summer months, the whole town becomes a backdrop where numerous cultural events take place including the famous Osor Musical Nights.

The Annunziata Church

The Annunziata Cape in the Čikat Bay has since 1858 been decorated by the church of the same name whose facade dates back to the classicism period. Precisely on this site, in front of the Annunziata Church, women from Lošinj welcomed their sailor husbands back home after months spent navigating at sea.

St. Francis Church and Monastery

The church and the monastery were built in the period between 1505 and 1513 whilst the tower’s bell dates back to the passage from 16th to 17th century. The St. Francis Monastery is located close to the Rapoća camp site and the tower bell is one of the most beautiful decorations giving the camp site its cultural note.

Čikat Park and Forest

The famous Čikat park and forest was planted by famous Lošinj naturalist, Ambroz Haračić, in 19th century. Numerous walking trails pass through the forest today illustrating the beauty of the landscape. Close to the park and the forest, in the Čikat Bay, a promenade by the sea is decorated by numerous Austrian villas once belonging to the aristocracy, amongst which is surely the most famous, Villa Karolina.
